Managing Organisations, People and Self - Assignment Example According to the case study, John Barker owns the double-glazing business â€Å"Hole in the Wall† and built it completely on the basis of his own skills and capability. He also employed a small group of people and provided his services on a small scale. The business had registered immense growth in the tenure of its operation over the years. In the recent years, the business had to deal with several key issues that harm its operations and reputation considerably. Contextually, this assignment will analyse the prevailing problems in the business that resulted in its performance decline and certain recommendations will be discussed in solving the same. The suggestions would certainly help the business to improve its performance up to a larger extent. 2.0. Problems / Evaluation John Barker started his double glazing business with employing 20 people in the initial stages of the operation of the business. However, with the retirement of his friend/supplier, Barker occupied the factory of his friend and thus expanded his business operations with the inclusion of more staffs. He also took the approach of making extensive advertisements in the local newspaper and the media in order to target the customers of the local market. The company had experienced considerable growth in recent times in the form of building better business reputation amid the customers. However, the growth of the company had been hindered by certain specific problems in the workplace that are yet to be evaluated. It can be viewed in this similar concern that there was increased number of complaints from the end of the customers about the quality of the services or the products of the company, which further damaged its better reputation amid the customers. Moreover, it has also been observe d that the employees of the business have become quite inefficient and their performance had declined considerably. In addition, a few of the employees had also left the company without providing any notice, which further harmed the operational efficiency of the business up to a larger extent. This aspect can resemble with the problems that prevail in the workplace of the business. From the analysis of the case study, it can be stated that there were problems of motivation that might be impacting the approach of the employees and steering them towards an undesirable direction. Moreover, the leadership and business management abilities of Barker can be questioned with regard to the poor performance of the business. The problems have been further identified and discussed in detail hereunder. 2.1. Motivation Motivation is regarded as one of the imperative aspects, which impacts the behaviour of an individual. It encourages people to conduct their work in an efficient and dedicated mann er (Reem, 2011). An aging population Essay Factors such as an aging population, technological advances, and the advent of managed care have indeed changed the way health care is being offered and is being perceived in the United States; for one, having an aging population means that the demand for nurses has increased.   Another impact is that of certain technological advances which make it easier to give healthcare at a more affordable rate.   In light of managed care and these other factors, much more is also required of a nurse aside from the standard of health care that was previously provided. Given the level of competition in this field and the increasing demands for highly specialized and trained nurses, I feel that the only way to continue my career in nursing is by being able to earn a bachelors degree in nursing.   More and more job opportunities these days require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in nursing. While all of these technological advancements in health care have indeed raised the standard of health care being provided in the United States, there are a few intangible factors that can never be replaced.   I see my future role as being able to develop these intangibles.   One important example is the special type of manner by which a nurse must conduct herself in order to be effective in performing her task.   The bedside manners are very important and it is something that just cannot be taught in classrooms.   Nurses need to be more than just machines that come in and punch in their time cards but rather professional registered nurses who show their passion and dedication to the profession through their approach and practice There will always be future developments in technology and there will always be an aging population.   The key to succeeding in this profession is in maintaining the level of professional conduct that people expect from the nurse and this is the future role that I see myself in the profession of nursing.

What's at Stake in The Graduate    Every time somebody rents a video or watches a movie on television there is always that little blurb right before they begin viewing about the picture being formatted for the screen. Usually, it is ignored or merely taken as a cue that the film is about to start. That little forewarning actually holds a lot of significance, for when one views a movie in its original, wide screen version, a whole new world opens up. When a movie is altered from its initial state, and cropped in the editing room for home viewing, an overwhelming amount of the film is unsuspectingly missed. This has become extremely obvious when viewing any movie, and in The Graduate a lot of innovative things are adjusted and lost. There are various shots edited, cut off, and many dynamic camera techniques lose their effect when The Graduate is transformed from the intended wide screen version to the formatted television edition. Edits are a very apparent change in The Graduate when one witnesses the wide screen version compared to the cropped format. For example, in one of the beginning scenes, when Mrs. Robinson is asking Ben for a ride home, she casually tosses his keys into the fish tank behind him. In the letter boxed edition, the viewer is able to see her deliberately throw the keys over Ben's shoulder and into the fish tank in one single shot, thereby watching Ben actually follow the arc of the keys' path, and their decent into the water. In the formatted version there is an edit, splitting the two characters into different shots. All the viewer sees is a medium shot of Mrs. Robinson throwing the key, then an immediate medium shot of Ben turning around and then all of a sudden the keys are floating in the tank. The viewer does not see the obvious attempt of the throw, the actual flight of the keys, nor Ben's reaction to it, therefore missing the important effect that reveals Mrs. Robinson's immediate c ontrol over Ben. Another example is in the scene at the Robinson's house, immediately following Mrs. Robinson's seduction as Ben is talking with Mr. Robinson. The two of them are talking in the foreground, when Mrs. Robinson is finally seen descending the stairs. In wide screen, Mrs. Robinson is shot walking in the distance right between Ben and Mr.

Truman Show Character Development

In the film, Truman Show by Peter Weir, the director used a variety of visual and verbal techniques to develop the character Truman Burbank. Wier used the movement of actors, dialogue, props and symbolism to show how Truman progressed from being a typical all-American guy to a courageous man who's willing to face his fears to break free from the chains that binds him to his ‘creator. ‘ Truman Burbank is a star of his own show- The Truman Show- and everybody knows except him. He lives in the best place in the world, Seahaven, where the people are always friendly and well-dressed. The houses they live in are painted to perfection with well-tended gardens. Here, Truman lives a seemingly perfect life with his beautiful wife, Meryl, and reliable friend, Marlon. As events unfold, Weir shows the audience how Truman is actually unsatisfied with his life- he feels trapped in his marriage and restricted with his job. He yearns for an adventure and dreams of finding Sylvia, his true love. Weir used dialogue and movement of actors to establish for the viewers what Truman is like in the beginning. The start of the film shows him acting out a role of a brave explorer in front of a mirror, saying: ‘Eat me dammit! That's an order! ‘ Because he doesn't have enough excitement in his life and Seahaven is not offering him the challenge he wants, he tries to make up for it by imagining a different life. He's also constantly tells his best friend, Marlon that he's ‘thinking of getting out' and is ‘going away for a while. ‘ But interestingly enough, even with a great desire of getting out, Truman never tries his hardest to leave Seahaven. Weir used Cristof's dialogue to show this: ‘If it was more than just a vague ambition, if he [Truman] was absolutely determined to discover the truth, there's no way we could prevent him. In this stage of the story, Weir shows that Truman is far from being a courageous man. To make sure Truman can't and won't leave, Cristof, the director of The Truman Show television program, used props and dialogue. After Truman's father died in the sea, he developed fear of water. When he came close to finding out that he's father is really alive his mother told him: ‘I know you feel bad about what happened†¦ I've never blame you Truman. ‘ They used his guilt to dismiss his suspicion. They also tried to make him ride a ferry to remind him of his fear when he tries to find Sylvia. When he tried to ride a plane to Fiji to continue looking for her, posters all around talks about the perils of flying to scare him were in the travel agency. A newspaper about Seahaven being the best place int he world is also shown and a movie called â€Å"Shome Me the Way to Go Home† was played on the tv to urge him to stay. Weir used all of these to show the audience that Truman might be slowly changing as he realize that the world he's living in, is not the only one out there. He can leave and lead the life he wants. Truman's character started to develop when he begins to find out that he's actually the star of his own show. Weir used movement of the actors to show how Truman progressed from being the go-with-the-flow-type of guy to a rebel. He acts inappropriately and doesn't think of the conseuences when he drives recklessly around the roundabout and reverses dangerously to get out of the traffic jam. Then, in a desperate attempt to leave Seahaven, he tried to overcome his fear of water by closing his eyes while speeding over the bridge, drives through a fire and even tried to go into a supposedly contaminated forrest. Later, he sailed in the sea through the storm and screamed at the top of his lungs: ‘Is that the best you can do? You're gonna have to kill me! ‘ Weir shows how much Truman, who only talk the talk, has progressed to walking the walk. He's finally doing something to get what he wants and he's giving his all. Truman's name has been used by Weir to symbolise how he is a ‘true man' amidst all the actors in Seahaven. He's been likened to Adam, the first man on the paradise. Adam's life story had become a summary of his. Adam left the paradise, Eden, after eating the forbidden truth of knowledge the same way Truman left his paradise, Seahaven, after learning the truth of his life. However, unlike God, Cristof wanted Truman to stay in Seahaven because it's ‘the way the world should be. ‘ The ending of the film had left the minds of the audience in a state of confusion and mixed emotions. Cristof urges Truman to stay, telling him: Truman, there's no more truth out there than in the world I created for you – the same lies and deceit. But in my world you have nothing to fear. The audience are torn between supporting Truman in his long awaited new life or wishing him to stay in Seahaven were they can watch him and be part of his life. Truman's answer had also likened him to being the second Adam- to being Jesus Christ who sacrificed himself and is ressurected to a new life as Truman sacrificed his seemingly perfect world where his life is controlled for the ‘sick place' where he h as freedom. Symbolism was used to show the audience how courageous and heroic Truman is. In conclusion, Weir used dialogue, movement of actors, props and symbolism to develop the character, truman Burbank. In all of the characters in the film, only Truman showed a change in character. He was always wishing to get out of Seahaven, yearning for an adventure and a new life. But he never did anything to do it; he let his fears and uncertainty to get the best of him. He chose to continue living in his seemingly perfect world. But as he see how far from perfect his life and whole world is, he summoned all his courage and began to rebel. He broke free from the chains that Cristof tied him to and truly became a courageous and heroic man.

Emotion and Body Language Essay

A relationship is about being able to share your ideas, thoughts and feelings with the one person that is supposed to love you without judgment. It is that fear of judgment that sometimes keeps us from proper and effective communication in that relationship that are so necessary to keep a relationship going. We become very good at composing our outside persona so that no one really sees our true inner thoughts and feelings. Sometimes we do it so well that not even the other partner in the relationship ever knows that there is anything wrong until it is too late. In the movie The Last Kiss that is what happens. The movie portrays a couple in a long relationship, where the question of marriage has always been on the table, and then they end up pregnant. The female character feels that their new life will start with the baby then end in marriage when work and everything else begins to get easier. This was the start of the conflict. As a couple you need to notice signs in your partner. The male character, you can tell, loves the female character but you can see there is a mound of emotions and doubts weighing on in his mind. He does not make these feelings aware to his partner. Instead he turns to another female he feels he connects with instead of talking to his girlfriend about his doubts and worries about losing his old self. He shares some of his issues with the other female. As a results that mistake in communication escalates into the male character almost losing his pregnant girlfriend. The interpersonal conflict started with a lack of communication in the very beginning of the movie that caused multiple other interpersonal conflicts. This lack of communication was the worries of the male characters thinking his old life will end due to his girlfriend’s pregnancy. Not wanting to share these worries with his girlfriend puts a lack of communication between partners. Although they carried a communication between each other it was lacking self- disclosure, in order to avoid conflict between their relationships. Instead the male character ops for silence and keeps all of his inner feelings and insecurities to himself. If the silence is prolonged, the parties in the relationship may drift apart or seek other people to provide them with emotional support. (Sole, 2011). This is what eventually happened in the movie. The male character turns to another females shoulder to lean on instead of communicating the issues to the person it involves. By this point in the movie I became aware that the communication between the boyfriend and girlfriend was lacking that emotional communication and neither one had great listening skills before the story line even began. I came to that conclusion due to the fact the male character did not feel he could disclose his true feelings and the female was not ever in tuned to his emotions that were obviously displayed in his body language and facial expressions in the beginning when they announce they are pregnant. The most common problems in relationships stem from silence or refusing to communicate, placating the other person, and playing games. These behaviors can sabotage a relationship and prevent honest, open communication. (Sole, 2011). Had the communication been really working between them earlier on the male would have felt secure enough with their relationship to express what was on his mind and she in return would have known something was troubling him without even having to speak. Their lack of communication due to the fact the male character wanted to avoid the conflict of admitting doubts and second thoughts about starting a family ended up escalating in a near loss of everything that he ended up realizing was most important. The movie was a great show of what avoidance and preventing conflict can do to a relationship. I think that if the characters would have been open and honest with each other as well as had the proper self -disclosure along with effective listening skills with one another they would have been able to both make a basic assertion of the problem at hand. Expressing his true emotions may have made him feel vulnerable in the moment but if there was any trust in the relationship it would have been a place to begin analyzing the problem together. The conflict in this movie showed the downward spiral of what happens when morals are questioned and true communication is not involved or avoided. A relationship is being able to come to someone you love with your insecurities and feel like you can both work on a solution. Sometimes that  is easier said than done for some. Trying to keep positive communication with your partner needs to be a priority. Making sure we are aware of issues can be done with effectively listening to everything about your partner from emotion to body language. When your partner discloses his or her thoughts it needs to be without judgment. Have sympathy for them. You can try to better understand the problems if you ask questions to make sure you comprehend everything so that you can both work to find a solution.

These viewpoints come from a few different people who all have different roles in the Hip Hop world. The video also talks about the negative roles such as walking blind, that girls choose to take on as they begin to be in Hip Hop videos. The video opens by Introducing who will be sharing their opinions throughout the video. It introduces us to Melissa Ford, who is a model, Irvin Got, who is a record executive, Kenned G, who is a radio show host, and Kevin Powell, who is a writer and activist. The first topic they cover is walking blind. The host opens by showing examples of how women are shown In hip hop music videos. She looks Into clips from both a 50 cent video and a Jay Z video. Both videos show females in small clothes, out numbering the males in the videos. This strengthens the hosts point that the girls might be looked at as walking blind. As she states, they may be looked at as nothing more than adornments; much Like Jewelry. Females In music videos are sometimes used Just as an object. With that being their primary, and pretty much only purpose of being in the video, they are not so much full blown human beings, as much as they are considered to be objects to be used. They also are viewed simply as entertainment, according to Irvin. Also, they argue that sometimes the women CHOOSE to put themselves in this position. Some Women think that being in a hip hop video is empowering to them. They feel the need for the extra attention that comes along with being on screen. In this video, each of the four present speakers gives their own personal pollens room different points of view. Having different jobs in the industry, they all have different ideas, even if only slightly. They all have different ideas to share and comments to add to the discussion. After the host introduces the idea of walking blind, the first to speak Is Irvin Got. He speaks about the entertainment aspect of the hip hop videos and the women in them. He says, Our Job is to entertain You think 1 OFF ten man won Is a police man or ten garbage man, or ten cocoons teacher People won have real lives and real Jobs, you think [they care] ? They Just want to be entertained. This shows that he is not looking at the situation as though women are being objectified or given a negative image; He sees it as strictly a business of entertainment. The females in his mind represent something to look at, and something that might possibly brighten a working mans day. Irvin even goes as far as to say that he would allow his own daughter to be apart of one of his music videos. This goes to show how construed the mind of society has become, because of the regularity of these images in the media. However, this Just adds to the realization hat Irvin does not see it in a negative way, and may not see the negative image that the video girls are given. The second to speak is model, Melissa Ford. The host asks Ford, Have you ever felt disrespected? Have you ever felt objectified or uncomfortable? What is that experience like? Ford responds by saying, In my personal experience, I looked at it as a Job. This is a paycheck. This is my stepping stone to get to another level This is also another way you can view this situation. Dancing in music videos may be the only option some females have to get a paycheck. Unfortunately, they are still given a negative image and looked at in a bad light. She makes the point that while some females do it for the business a spect, sometimes being in front of the camera makes a girl feel good about themselves. Other times they simply crave the attention they get from being on the camera. This also opens the door for young, insecure girls to become a part of this world. A young girl might be watching television and see an older women dancing in a provocative way, half naked, on a hip hop music video. That young girl may not think about the negative image that model is giving herself, UT instead might see a woman who is comfortable in her own skin and is getting the attention of many guys and even other women. Melissa tells that the competition to be noticed is more extreme now. Where as there used to be five or six girls, now theres fifty or sixty girls Youve got to fight for the attention. The host then asks the question, How have you seen a change over time Compare music videos from the early asss to music videos from 2007. The question is targeted at Kevin Powell, and he first responds with, muff know, from 85 to 90, 91, you didnt see that. You saw a few females but there was a balance that was happening. This shows that over time, there have been changes in society that also change the image that the girls in the hippo videos are portraying. While before, they might have been Just to balance out a gender ratio, now they girls outnumber the guys. The girls are no longer looked at in the same innocent way; they have taken on more sexual roles and are seen in a totally different light. This is why the portrayal of women in hip hop videos has changed, and is now negative. Powell then sha res how he was actually shocked, and wondered what kind of video is this? He hits on the point that I brought up earlier by saying, little girls actually believe that this is what women hood is. The balance change has left girls thinking that a video girl is all they can be, and their only path to being accepted and successful. The little girls dont see the negative aspect of the video girl, only that they are receiving attention by the guys around them. Lastly, the host asks Kenned if she believed women were being objectified. Kenned quickly replay, Tolerantly 1 00. I AAA nave a problem Walt ten perception Tanat Is going on with women in videos today When you see a beautiful woman, and I respect her for being beautiful, but my problem is what about the little girl that doesnt know that okay, Just being beautiful is not enough. Video girls are giving off the perception to young girls that hey, if youre pretty, then this is what you will get to do. More and more young girls are being sucked into this world, not realizing what theyre getting themselves into. Kenned taps into the superficial aspect of it all when she says, If that girl gains twenty pounds shes out of a Job. So my issue is the fact of how these women are being portrayed in these videos. Young girls see provocative dancing and clothing in these music videos and think it is okay, because its all over television and all over the media. They feel as if this is the norm. So in conclusion, while girls are Jumping at the chance to be in a hip hop video as one of the many video girls, they need to first think what they are portraying themselves as. Any girl that is working towards being a part of the music video world is at risk of having a bad image from that point on. They should look at whether they are playing a role in the belittlement of women, or if they are simply performing a job.

In the Wright household, the men are searching for something out of the ordinary, an obvious indication that Minnie has been enraged or provoked into killing her husband. Their intuition does not tell them that their wives, because they are women, can help them gain insight into what has occurred between John and his wife. They bring Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters along merely to tend to the practical matters, considering them needlessly preoccupied with trivial things and even too unintelligent to make a contribution to the investigation, as Mr. Hale’s derisive question reveals: â€Å"Would the women know a clue if they did come upon it?† (289). Basically this was made possible by the fact that the data for the park is available on the internet through various websites. All the other features and properties of the park that form part of the data collected were collected from the entirety of the park and thus no part thereof was sampled as a representative. Data collection and instruments used In this research, three main methods of data collection were applied; observation, telephony and search from the internet. Observation was carried out by the researcher visiting the area and recording all relevant information and data that could be observed with the help of park guides. The information collected through observation mainly included park activities, the general settings and environment of the settlement, demographic and other similar information; the researcher visited the park twice, once during the weekdays and once during the w eekend so as to get the contrast between those two periods in terms of residential activities. Telephony was applied when additional information was needed about the park both before the visit and after. The researcher basically called the park manager and asked any relevant questions related to the study. The researcher especially called the manager to get information about the size of playground, tennis court, open fields of the park. The final and most productive source of data for the study was the internet. Most of the quantitative data for the park was obtained from various websites dealing with recreational parks in the USA. Information about parks and their demographics was obtained from websites with park data, other specific information about issues related to the parks such as health and crime was obtained from websites dealing with the specific issues in relation to estates. Search Strategy For data to be gathered from websites, a good search strategy targeting the most relevant websites was required so as to get quality information. The search strategy included identification of the main key words related to the topic of study and Dearborn Park. Social Justice in India Essay An Inquiry into the Conditions of Social Justice in India [Note: 1 . This study of Justice concentrates on conditions of social Justice in India and will not include general issues of criminal Justice; the proposal refers mainly to social justice and popular ideas of Justice, as linked to, but distinct from rights. 2. This proposal is built on the insights drawn from the previous research programme on autonomy, and thus while this is a new proposal it is also a follow up on the earlier exercise. Similar to the preceding one, it has research, publications, and dialogue segments. 3. The current research plan has developed through a series of onsultations; its enunciation here is thus a product of the dialogic approach of our research work. 4. This statement is divided into three sections (a) Description of the theme, and its context; (b) approach of the study; (c) activities proposed ] A. The Context and the Theme of Social Justice 1 . Though the theme of Justice has occupied a high ground in philosophical discussions since the beginning of political philosophy, yet in terms of democracy and popular politics its exact meaning and implications have been nebulous, one of the reasons being the fact that Justice in reality is a meeting ground of many ideas, ituations, concepts, expectations, mechanisms, and practices. Many things intersect to form the context of social Justice ethical ideas of the people, laws, the evolving nature of claims, and the pattern of collective claim making politics, institutional issues relating to the delivery mechanisms of Justice, ideas about rights and entitlements, ideas among the citizens about responsibility of the rulers towards them, plus many situations generating many conditions of Justice. All these make the social context of Justice, also the social form and social site of Justice. By social Justice we therefore indicate as a beginning: (i) social context of Justice, (it) social content of justice, and (iii) social sites of Justice. We also indicate that as social, there can be many contexts, contents, and sites. 2. The point of plurality made in the last sentence is significant, because notions and ideas, claims and practices, and mechanisms of Justice have depended on varying situations. Thus we can witness various forms of social Justice in reality social claim as Justice, attainment and restoration of dignity as Justice, end to discrimination as ustice, retribution as Justice, conciliation of claims as Justice, social idea of minimal justice, positive discrimination as Justice, protection of the vulnerable sections of society as Justice, and finally autonomy as Justice. Social Justice can and does have strong gender implications. 3. Situations of marginality produce ideas of Justice. Lack of access to means of representation / resources / survival means such as education, health, etc. produces marginality. Similarly displacement creates marginal situations. Likewise minority status engenders marginal existence. Hereditary discriminations have the same ffect. Gender has the same role. These marginal situations have one thing in common they speak of power matrix. And they produce specific calls for Justice. Different marginalities generate different expectations and forms of Justice thus gender Justice, Justice for the indigenous people, Justice for those denied of dignity death or for people living below poverty line all of which mean Justice for those who cannot access the mechanisms for Justice. The thing to note here is that while constitution has provisions of Justice in its various articles and clauses, unlike in the ase of rights Justice does not have a compact formulation, even though the Preamble and earlier the Objectives Resolutions of the Constituent Assembly had justice as one of the founding provisions. 4. One of the implications of this manifold context is that while the issue of Justice is studied only or mostly closely in terms of governance, its delivery mechanisms, and the various governmental forms of Justice, social Justice as distinct and as the other of governmental Justice emerges as a distinct category of social reality to be inquired and appreciated in its ow n right. Such a study will have to concentrate on the forms f social Justice indicated above, the impact of public interest litigation as an avenue of ensuring social Justice and as a process contributing to the idea of social Justice, the Justiciability of social Justice, and the significance of the particular relation between rights, capabilities, claims, and law in terms of the idea of social Justice equally significantly, in terms of making this idea a reality. Finally, the significance of this has to be sought in the realisation of the notion of responsibility responsibility of the State, its various organs, various governmental institutions, and their national nd international commitments to provide Justice. In sum, the context of the research can be summed up as one that provides the background to the interrelation between Justice and society. 5. Given the significance of the idea of Justice in the Indian national movement and in its associated ideas and thoughts, and the wide demand for Justice from each of the underprivileged sections of the Indian society today, and the recurring incidents of communities assuming the responsibility of delivering direct Justice in the background of perceived delays and determining their own norms of Justice, the proposed inquiry assumes significance. During the national movement there were several articulations of the idea of Justice; similarly in the constituent assembly proceedings competing and complementary ideas of Justice emerged. Likewise in the writings of several thinkers Justice has been discussed from various angles. Apart from intellectual, theoretical, and literary exercises, other discursive and institutional exercises have been marked by popular thoughts and ideas. Various manifestos, leaflets, pamphlets, popular writings, sketches, songs, newspaper articles, speeches, etc. have been the other sites where ideas of Justice at the popular level have been rticulated. 6. Social Justice is an arena only partly covered by law; rest is covered by social and political ideas and practices. Ethical ideas about honour, right, respect, autonomy, claim, share, revenge, and shame also play significant role in determining mores of justice. A sense of entitlements also has a role to play. Justice thus propels variety of forms from social-economic rights, to the forms of Justiciability, forms of redistribution of wealth, the form of due process, subjective experiences of Justice, and as distinct from these experiences the objective tests of Justice. In this context ne has to note the parts played by social movements and social mobilisations in determining the popular concepts of Justice. . One can already sense in the preceding description of the theme of inquiry the approach likely to underlie the proposed programme References have been made already to the historical milieu of nationalist ideas, communitarian ideas, and the constituent assembly deliberations. We need to recall in this context that in colonial India, the idea of social Justice had formed the core of a politic al movement, as in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra; and after an interregnum Justice again became the ore element of many movements and formations. Since mid 70s and early 80s of the last century one can observe in the country a significant trend in governance and the social and economic (SE) rights scenario in India. It was during this time that the government started shifting its focus from political declarations on civil and political rights to programmes, policies, legislations and Acts for delivering basic services to its citizens. In a way it began with 20-point programme of the Government in the mid-70s. At the same time due to a crisis in legitimacy of the state following the Emergency (1975-77), a host of peoples movements sprang up across the country demanding rights from the state, at the same time devising alternative models for ensuring basic services. We also began witnessing from that time the ideas and practices of committed administration, known by the phrase developmental bureaucracy, and committed Judiciary, that is to say a Judiciary, whose premise is valuing ideals of social Justice. Judicial activism too emerged in that context. This historical context provides the ground for research into the process by which Justice as a social and political programme took concrete shape in the country. This historical context has also propelled citizens bodies, and peoples movements to take stock of the condition of rights, and launch campaigns at all levels to demand the right for sustainable livelihood, which includes issues of access to food, clothing, and housing and extends to the right to a dignified life with access over utilisation and control of resources. These campaigns have become significant in making the SE rights of the people a crucial item in public agenda of social Justice, and in the emergence of public demand for transparency, accountability and efficiency from the tates and direct participation of society in matters of governance. Instances of the profound expression of such campaigns, which have resulted in legislations at state and national levels on various issues are not lacking. They have raised the level of legal arguments, Judicial awareness, and the quality of constitutionalism including constitutional interpretations. All in all, an inquiry into conditions of Justice will require an investigation of the historical milieu. 2. The social Justice scenario is to be investigated in the context of two streams of entitlements: (a) sustainable livelihood, which means access to adequate means of iving, such as shelter, clothing, food, access to developmental means, employment; education, health, and resources; (b) social and political participation (enabling or empowering means), which is built on the guarantee of fundamental rights, and promotion and empowerment of the right to participation in the government, and access to all available means of Justice, and on the basis of which Justice as a political programme becomes a viable reality. We require therefore a study based on select illustrations of various issues relating to government policies on topics such as: a) the right to food and water; (b) housing, which includes resettlement and healthcare, (e) right to work, and (f) access to information and the right to communication. In short, one of the important ways in which the inquiry will proceed will be through taking stock of various forms that have occasioned the articulation of ideas of social Justice. 3. The all-important question however will be how are we to make sense of different notions and realities of Justice, which we have already noted? Governmental Justice consists of various welfare schemes, law, legal literacy, administrative forms of rbitration such as tribunals, boards, courts, public interest litigation, new legal education, plus the constitutional idea of protection of weaker sections of the society and introduction of positive discrimination. But this dominant governmental form cannot satisfy the requirements expressed in other forms of Justice, indicated above. The inquiry conducted through historical investigations into conditions of social justice, and select case studies, has to provide us an answer as to: What constitutes a just society or Just social relations? Or, how can people having conflicting interests nd values agree on principles of Justice? What constitutes in the main the world of social Justice in India? Where and how do the social-Justice-talks feature in Indian political and social discourse? People talk of lack of or inadequate access to legal justice; dalits talk of social Justice against the backdrop of discrimination, caste society and social and govt. nterventions; activists talk about how the peoples notion of social Justice is often trumped by economic rationality and growth and other powerful interest associated with them; women activists also talk about Justice in the ontext of discrimination, patriarchy and so on. For the sake of clarity then we can say that the project will be about critically examining the ways people/groups encompassing different contexts use the language of social Justice to advance their interests, to critique and to promote their values, and advance their claims in the context of their respective notions of what constitute injustices. . Thus, the inquiry will be conducted keeping its eyes on the various uses of the social Justice language in India; its multiple contexts, its myriad invocations and its varied renditions. One might say the ways in which people/groups/ activists use the social Justice language may not be coherent; may not even pass the standard set by political philosophers. But a critical examination of these usages will do an important job. As a result of the work, these discourses can become the elements of a new theoretical explanation of the dynamics of Justice and critique the existing ones. We can term thus the approach of the proposed study as part ethnographic, if it is part historical, part analytical. 5. In its analytic dimension, the study will remember that in its present form legal heory views liberty bearing provisions of a countrys basic text as negative rights, that is they do not require state resources; the actual obligation of the state is not to do something, i. e. not to subject an individual to torture or not to carry out arbitrary arrests. On the other hand, Justice bearing provisions are viewed as positive, require state resources since they are seen as obligations to do something, e. g. to provide free primary or secondary education or health care facilities. Presented in this manner, it is easy to see why states have been more receptive to implementing iberty-bearing provisions and why today the public attention is increasingly on a set are seen as benefits given by the state. They are also viewed as aspirations that the state would one day like to fulfil through a process of progressive realisation. The growing public opinion is however quite different from this perception. Justice in popular politics is seen as the congealed form of entitlements, and as a set of provisions inextricably linked to differential notions of rights and responsibilities, Since most of the governmental responses to these urgings for Justice have been uch more through executive policies, rather than through fundamental recognition of entitlements, the problem is that most of these policies operate in an ad-hoc basis. The government assumes that it knows about how to provide welfare, but ignores the fact that a welfare approach in order to be successful has to based on a consensus on the notion of Justice rather than be based on the benevolence of a mai-baap sarkar (benefactor government). The analytic dimension in this inquiry therefore has to take stock of public interest litigations in recent years fought on the terrain of justice. The process of analysing the legal dynamics of social Justice should include a study of various approaches undertaken by the government from time to time in guaranteeing Justice the welfare approach, equity in development approach, efficiency approach, empowerment approach, and the entitlements-approach. The attempt should be to find out how much these approaches have mixed with each other in activist, Juridical, and governmental discourses over the years, and have contributed to the development of the idea of Justice, which are marked by notions of (i) non-negotiability of Justice-centric provisions, (it) non-derogability of these rovisions, (iii) accommodation and harmonisation of various popular interests and claims on the basis of fairness, compensation, guarantee, Joint custodianship, and differential needs. 6. In sum, the approach of the inquiry will be part historical, part ethnographic, and part analytic. The purpose is composite consisting of the following aims: The inquiry will enormously enrich our ideas of responsibility, rights, entitlements, and claims, It will give an idea of the index of of social Justice in the light of rights and entitlements; The role of popular politics and the extent of articipation of the peoples organisations in programme and implementation of the welfare schemes towards ensuring provisions of social Justice; Debate between rights versus welfare based approaches to development; Shift in the governance agenda towards policies and programmes rather than enacting legislations, which would bestow rights on citizens; Impact of womens awareness on the Justice discourse in India; Similarly, the impact of the awareness about various marginal situations in a democracy which call for differential notions, dynamics, and institutional operations of Justice; ? The close relation between the idea of Justice and the political issue of the delivery mechanisms of Justic e; An investigation into the twin reality Justice as a strong idea in politics and Justice as practice; And therefore an investigation into two forms of social Justice Justice as a function of government, that is to say, governmental form of Justice, and Justice as a product of dialogues in contested and differential situations, that is to say, dialogic Justice. C. Activities Proposed 1 . The programme will have two segments (a) research (b) dialogues. The research . The research will produce a series of status reports on Justice, and a comprehensive volume. The volume will be based on study papers based on the researches on the following themes: a. Historical investigation into the development of the idea of Justice as a fundamental element of popular politics in the colonial time, and different intellectual discourses on Justice b. Historical investigation into the succeeding constitutional deliberations on Justice c. Ethnographies of Justice I (dalits and Justice) d. Ethnographies of Justice II (indigenous people and Justice) e. Ethnographies of ustice Ill (survival rights, property notions, and Justice) f. Ethnographies of Justice IV (women and Justice) g. Justice as legal activity a review of the history of Public Interest Litigation (PIL) h. The literary site of Justice i. Justice and injustice: who are the victims and how do they perceive? J. Social justice in form of two binaries legalities and illegalities; and governmental Justice and dialogic Justice The volume will throw light on how the idea of Justice has played its part in refashioning democratic politics its relation to the popular discourse on rights, welfare, and law. . Since the study agenda as proposed here is strongly perched on an appreciation of differential circumstances and the marginalities producing the most immanent forms of Justice, a dialogue programme on the basis of the appreciation of differences and marginalities becomes an essential part of the study agenda. Such dialogue would include conversations with and among different actors in the arena of social Justice process who are marginally situated in the world of formal politics and governance, or are actors in propelling the idea of Justice as a political programme, or are critical n shaping a new politico-juridical discourse on Justice. As has always been the CRG practice, research will be combined with dialogue, will gather strength from the latter, and must go back in terms of its inputs to the dialogic partners. This was done in the preceding programme on autonomy; it is proposed that study and dialogue will be combined again. This dialogue will focus on social movements. Thus dalit activists, activists of social Justice, lawyers, sub-divisional and tehsil-level Judges, gender rights activists, people involved in water sharing movements and other nvironmental movements will become the dialogue partners. Similarly decentralisation and Justice will become another significant theme and site for dialogue. Dialogue with victims of injustice can become one of the most significant occasions for dialogue on Justice. Dialogues on Justice A series of three dialogues on Justice was carried out by the Calcutta Research Group (CRG), in 2006 where about seventy people took part from diverse backgrounds. These dialogues were combined with public lectures in Kolkata and Darjeeling. These dialogues are also part of the CRGs research programme on social Justice in India. They have immensely contributed to the collective knowledge on the state of social justice in the country, thrown up new ideas and questions, and have shed light on how collective struggles for Justice go on in this country with or without the help of law. At a fundamental level, they have been instrumental in clarifying various notions restitution, or rights and Justice. These dialogues have also helped us in gaining knowledge about various repositories of archival material on Justice, such as popular tracts, manifestos, legal materials, other popular writings, political declarations, and eportages that tell us lot about various perceptions on Justice. Dialogue has been an integral part of the research design of CRG. Our colleagues from various institutions participating in these discussions reinforced our belief and emphasis on this procedure. To say the least, no amount of scholarly paper presentation in seminars or philosophical treatise would have clarified the plural character of Justice, the historically predicated nature of it, or its contentious character, as these dialogues have done. Our fear is that we may not have been able to do Justice to the richness of the discussions on the three occasions. Several institutions came forward to assist us in holding these three dialogues: the Ford Foundation, the Lok Niti Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, the European Union and the International IDEA. The first dialogue was held in Kolkata on 5 June 2006 on the theme of Conditions of Social Justice in India. One of the aims in convening the dialogue in Kolkata was to take note of the two trends in the literature on social Justice. Of these two, one consists of existing writings focused on formulating or analyzing some normative principles of Justice, which states and other delivering agencies ought to follow in ourse of their administrative and welfare actions. The second trend is made up of ethnographic researches, which concentrate on how people negotiate their ways through different systems of Justice customary or modern existing in society, and make their own meanings of Justice. The highlights of this of this dialogue was Identifying themes and case studies with special reference to West Bengal and eastern India, and developing an appropriate research design; understanding in this context the complex relationship between theory and ethnography; preparing a comprehensive, annotated bibliography that will include a list of texts of relevant olicies, enactments, public interest litigations and relevant legal decisions, parliamentary and legislative assembly debates and material relating to popular demands for Justice, and popular tracts on Justice and finally, identifying the institutional locations, resources and individual researches in the country particularly in West Bengal and eastern India. The second dialogue was An inquiry into the Conditions of Social Justice in India and was held in Darjeeling, on 26-28 June 2006. Continuing from where the Kolkata deliberations left, it was once again noted that situations of marginality produce deas of Justice. The third dialogue took place in Bhubaneswar, on the specific theme of Justice and Democracy in Divided Societies. It was held on 20-22 November 2006. The main objectives of the dialogue in this context were: To explore the dynamics of social divisions in contemporary South Asian societies compounded by governmental operations, which transform divisions into marginalities; To propose a possible genda of social Justice in the context of divided societies an agenda that bases itself on marginalities and can address therefore the issues of Justice in a new way; To suggest policy alternatives in terms of their bearing on democracy. The legal fiction of a homogeneous public immune from the operations of power in the society is nowhere more sharply focused than in the writings of Jurgen Habermas, Axel Honneth and their associates. As the legal fiction subsumes governmentally produced social divisions mentioned above, issues of Justice get continuously sidetracked and pushed into the background. In other words, democracies of modern times bring into play a discourse where they produce injustice without being seen as such. Thus, it is not surprising that marginalities, livelihood crises and hunger deaths do not get constituted as public agenda in societies revisited by them. A post-colonial engagement with the issue of democracy helps demystify the fiction, and thus can seek to push democracy beyond the grids of governmentality by teasing out the implications of social divisions for issues of Justice and bring them to bear on the functioning of contemporary democracies in divided societies.

Jack Owens 12-18-13 Government President paper Andrew Jackson Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767, in the Waxhaw settlement, a community of Scotch-Irish immigrants along the border between north and south Carolina. As far as I know they are still disputing his place of origin. he claimed that his place of origin was actually south Carolina though in my opinion if he said he was from there he was from that location. His father had died before his birth Andrew’s mother had three sons and was living with her Crawford relatives. Jackson was attending local schools and received an elementary education. When the revolutionary war ended Jackson’s immediate family had been wiped out fighting in Carolina backcountry was especially savage, a bombardment of ambushes, massacred and sharp skirmishes. Jackson’s oldest brother Hugh enlisted in a patriot regiment and died at Stono ferry, according to the article he was said to have died form heatstroke from heatstroke. Too young for formal soldiering, Andrew and his brother Robert fought with American irregulars. In 1781, they were captured during this time Jackson was told to clean a british officers boots and refused which then drew to the officer to slash Jackson with his sword also in that time Robert contracted smallpox, which he died shortly after their release. While trying to retrieve his nephews from a British prison ship Andres mother also fell ill and later died. An orphan and hardened veteran at the age of fifteen. Jackson drifted, he taught at a school for a little amount of time. Then he started to read into law while in north Carolina. After admission to the bar in 1787, he accepted an offer to server as a public prosecutor in the new mero district of north Carolina, west o... ...vancing enemies with artillery and rifle fire. The British casualties exceeded two thousand Jackson ended up only loosing thirteen to death with fifty-eight wounded or missing. The idea of untrained and volunteer soldiers against veteran British soldiers was astonishing. Jackson was then seen as a hero next to George Washington. Jackson remained in the military after the war. Late in 1817,he received orders to subdue the Seminole Native Americans, who were raiding across the border from Spanish Florida itself. He captured its bastions at St. Marks Pensacola and arrested, tried, and executed two British nationalists whom he charged with abetting the Native Americans.
